Go-ahead for larger and better supermarket to create 50 jobs
The supermarket giant says it will upgrade and improve the outside of the store, in Osmaston Park, after councillors on Derby City Council's planning committee rubber-stamped the application.
The store layout will also be improved along with road access to the site.
Parking spaces will fall from 510 to 483, although there will be more places for disabled people and parents with young children.
Foundations for an extension were built in April last year, but it was never completed. A new cafe will also be created at the store.
Christian Wakelin, Sainsbury's development executive, said: "We are thrilled to have the go-ahead to extend the Osmaston Park store and look forward to being able to start on improvement works before too long."
A further 150 jobs could be created if the chain is granted permission to extend its store in Chaddesden.
Sainsbury's is still in discussion with the council over the plans which would see the store, on The Wyvern, extending non-food ranges, including home and clothes.
Mr Wakelin said: "Sainsbury's is keen to invest even further in Derby by creating a flagship store at Chaddesden and we look forward to a positive outcome there, too."
