Loughborough firm named UK's 26th best university spin-out

Thursday, March 11, 2010, 08:30

A hi-tech Loughborough firm has been named the 26th best UK company to be spun out of a university.

Phase Vision has designed a hi-tech measuring system to help aircraft and car manufacturers after using technology developed at Loughborough University.

The company was given the ranking in a new national league table for university spin-out companies created by the Daily Telegraph.

Phase's 3D measurement devices – Quartz Scanners – have attracted the interest of a number of well-known plane and car manufacturers.

Managers believe contracts with some of these firms could be worth hundreds of thousands of pounds in the next three to four years.

The product has been tested and is due to be released commercially this year.

The scanner comes in various sizes and costs up to £100,000. It could be used in a broad range of industries – including bio-science – and in the design of false teeth, crowns and prosthetic limbs.

Chief executive Ralph Weir said: "We're incredibly proud of the product we've created."

Professor Phill Dickens, Loughborough University's pro-vice-chancellor for enterprise, said: "Phase Vision is an excellent example of how the university's innovative research can be commercialised to deliver impact. It is excellent to see the company's impact recognised in the Telegraph's league table for university spin-outs."
