In October, Herbert Brown took over the former H. Samuel store in Cornmarket and took on five staff who had been facing redundancy.
At the time, the Leeds-based chain said it planned to spend £150,000 refurbishing the premises. It said the new-look store would create more jobs.
The company, which runs more than 30 stores in the north of the country, has now closed the branch to allow the work to take place.
A spokeswoman for Herbert Brown said: "As the shop opened so close to Christmas last year, we felt it would be best to wait until the New Year before the work was carried out."
