University students have been given a boost after a donation of hi-tech equipment from a pharmaceutical company. The Discovery Bioscience department - AstraZeneca's research and development site in Loughborough - gave a powerful microscope and two machines which can analyse single cells to the town's university.
Professor Chris Hewitt said: "This couldn't have come at a better time for us as we have just taken on 10 new PhD students. The equipment will help them with their analysis of cells."
A spokeswoman for AstraZeneca said: "Staff are encouraged to make sure no equipment is left unused for long periods of time and offer surplus kit to other departments throughout the UK.
"However, if no company use can be found for an item within six months, donations to the community are then considered."
